Sewing thread, foils, 30×20 cm | 2017
The novel „Pedro Paramo“ by the author Juan Rulfo and his non-linear handling of time inspired me to create this work. Each foil was embroidered by hand with a motif, each of which stands on its own and at the same time, when superimposed, creates an overall image.
Just as the past in the form of ancestors and personal experiences leaves traces in a person’s life, in their personal memories and in the collective memory, the needle perforates the foil and the thread reinforces the traces of the needle stitches.
Based on Juan Rulfo’s photographic work, I have tried to create the effect of overlapping and co-existing stories: past, present and future of one’s self and ancestors are visible at the same time and overlap to form a snapshot of one’s life path.
